Create and use contact segments

Segment your contact base to precisely target your marketing campaigns.

Updated May 15, 2026

Segments are groups of contacts filtered according to criteria you define. They allow you to target a specific audience when sending email or SMS campaigns.

Access: open Acquisition, then Messaging, then the Segments tab.

Create a segment

  1. Click Create Segment.
  2. Give it a descriptive Name (e.g. “Active Customers” or “SMS Subscribers”).
  3. Define your filter criteria:
  • Lead status. One or more of lead, prospect, customer. Leave blank for all contacts.
  • Created between. Filter contacts by creation date.
  • Imported between. Filter contacts by import date (CSV or Leads).
  • Tags. Tags separated by commas, matched on Any tag or All tags.
  1. Optionally add custom logic rules. Each rule combines a field (name, email, phone, lead status, creation date, import date, email consent, SMS consent, tags), an operator (equal to, not equal to, contains, starts with, ends with, is empty, is not empty, in list, before, after) and a value. Add as many rules as necessary.
  2. Click Create Segment.

Use a segment in a campaign

When creating a campaign in the Campaigns tab, select your segment in the Audience (segment) field.

Only contacts with the appropriate consent receive the campaign, even if they belong to the segment.

Dynamic segments

Segments are evaluated at the time of sending. Any contact added after the creation of the segment is automatically included if it matches the defined criteria.

Examples of useful segments

  • Customers only. Lead status = customer.
  • Recently imported contacts. Imported between two dates.
  • VIP tag holders. Tags contains vip.
  • SMS subscribers. Custom rule: SMS consent equal to true.
  • Prospects without SMS consent. Lead status = prospect plus one rule: SMS consent equal to false.
